The word “Hospice” comes from the Latin word “Hospituum” which means “Guesthouse for the sick and weary traveler”.
The early Hospice developed from the 4th century along Christian Pilgrim routes.
They cared for the travelers, orphans, the sick, injured and the dying. Their work was based upon Christ’s’ command “As you do it to one of the least of these my brethren, you do it to me” – see Matthew 25 vs. 40. Those they cared for were treated as honored guests, no matter how poor and destitute.
